About
Sarah Mills ‘09 will be in Cape Town, South Africa going to neighboring townships with Community Animal Welfare workers, helping with veterinary care for township animals. She will also be doing humane education in township schools – since the townships are often violent places where human needs are great, animal needs are often ignored and the legacy of violence continues amongst children.
“As many psychologists have shown, disregard for an animal is often the “gateway” to disregard for a human being in a child. With the Animal Rescue Organization, I will be teaching “humane education” and animal welfare classes to township schools and community centers.” Sarah adds, “Included in these lessons are fun things like puppet shows and hands-on workshops for the kids, all with the message of the importance of respect for ALL living things and nonviolence towards them. I am working on one puppet show with the organization right now, and it’s quite fun - I’m also learning a little Xhosa!”
