About

The John B. Hurford ‘60 Humanities Center sponsors small Reading Groups devoted to shared close readings of texts without the pressure of pedagogical oversight. Some reading groups might take a single work of relative complexity as their subject; others, a more diverse array of smaller texts. Proposed by students or faculty, groups may consist of a mix of both, as well as College staff (usually three to eight members, total).

This reading group will examine the greatest orators of our time to see the way they raised their voices, clenched their fists and captivated their audiences. Using a variety of media, including tape recordings, radio broadcasts and youtube clips, we will look at political rhetoric in all its forms, the good and the bad. All are welcome. No extemporaneous speaking or rhetorical skill required.
