Major: Political Science
Home Town: Olympia, Washington

Placement: I will be a fellow at Community Legal Services (CLS). CLS is a non-profit law firm and I will be working in the Employment unit helping people with criminal backgrounds remove some of their barriers to employment.

Haverford House Project: My goal is to run a series of Ex-Co type classes that would help get Haverford students more connected to what is happening in Philadelphia. I’m also looking to start a web site or weekly email that would keep Haverford students abreast of goings on in Philadelphia.

Major: Latin
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York

Placement: I will be a fellow at Parkway NW High School for Peace and Social Justice. I will help facilitate and implement new and continuing in class projects and after school programming. I will also help students become more involved in the center and take over leadership roles within the center so that is it truly student run.

Haverford House Project: I want to implement a student-led seminar at Haverford College discussing an East or South African country, involving both Haverford and Parkway students. I hope to have the hard work from this seminar culminate with a trip to whichever country we study in depth.

Major: Biology
Home town: Cherry Hill, New Jersey

Placement: I will be serving my placement at the Lourdes Center for Public Health in Camden, NJ. I will be coordinating projects that focus on issues of violence prevention, diabetes telemedicine, food access, and healthcare for the uninsured. I will also be working with undergraduate students to conduct population-based research that will ultimately be utilized to help reduce healthcare disparities.

Haverford House Project: I want to run a mentoring program that will connect Haverford students with middle school students in Camden. I also hope to start a summer safety program run by Haverford students open to children in both Camden, NJ and Philadelphia. The activities will focus on violence prevention as an issue of public health.

Major: History
Home Town: Sewickley, Pennsylvania

Placement: I will work for the Fair Food Project at their Fair Food Farmstand in Reading Terminal Market, as well as on the Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign and on their Farm to Institution Program. My work will connect Philadelphians to sustainable, humane foods and work towards food justice.

Haverford House Project: I want to work with Food Fight at Haverford College to raise awareness on campus about issues of food justice and expanding the College’s support of sustainable foods.

Major: English Minor: Political Science
Home Town: Brooklyn, New York

Placement: I will be working as an education associate at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. I will be helping to support and expand the Bicycle Coalition’s education and advocacy programs, which work towards increasing use and comfort with bicycles as part of a larger, more environmentally friendly cultural shift.

Haverford House Project: I am interested in getting Haverford students into Philadelphia to explore some of the more interesting locations and history relating to peace, culture, and social justice, in the form of tours/discussions which will get us really thinking about –rather than just looking at– the city and how it fits in our own lives.

Major: Biology Minor: Spanish
Home town: Swarthmore, Pennsylvania

Placement: I will serve my fellowship with the Philadelphia GROW Project at the Drexel University School of Public Health. This project works with families of Philadelphia to promote child growth and nutrition and to prevent hunger.

Haverford House Project: I would like to use my interest in health and nutrition to connect Haverford students with urban farming initiatives in Philadelphia. I’m also interested in reaching out to freshmen and connecting them to the city, its history and culture, and potential service projects.
