Frosty Friday at the Ford

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Views of the area behind Barclay Hall known as “Barclay Beach” because of its adjacency to our duck pond, where steam is rising on this first frosty day of the season.

Note to prospective students:  I realize that college viewbooks across the nation (including our viewbook!) are chockablock full of pastoral images like this.  But without judging anybody else’s campus, here’s what I know:  you can see vistas like this across pretty much our entire 216 acres.  Don’t fear that it only looks this good if you photograph it from a certain angle, in a certain season, or at a certain time of day.  Haverford College really is this gorgeous.

Fall Break

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Students have the week off — or at least have the week away from campus.  Back in the day, Fall Break was just a long weekend. I also remember autumn being much farther along by that time, and a snowstorm during this week in 1979.

Today it’s 75, and disagreement among our trees about just what season it is:

Late summer on Founders Green

Fall Break is also a time for minor fixes to the physical plant.  Walkers in the habit of cheating sidewalk corners outside Lloyd will now be stepping on granite block.  No amount of diligence by the groundskeepers could keep this highly trafficked intersection green:

Across Campus, Blindfolded

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

What’s this?

One of several pairs of students walking across campus the other day, the sighted leading the blindfolded.  The answer from Visiting Assistant Professor of Writing Sue Benston:

The ‘blindfold lab’ was designed for my class, a Writing Program seminar titled “Medical Narratives.”  For last Thursday’s class we had read a memoir on blindness, “Touching the Rock” by John Hull, in which the author explores psycho-philosophic implications of losing sight. I invited the students to walk the Haverford campus blindfolded (under individual supervision) and to reflect on that experience afterwards in writing.  They generated some deeply thoughtful passages, which touched on several aspects of Hull’s own meditations.
Just another day at the College of Knowledge.

Haverford On The Web, Friday 10/3

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Baseball Alert:  New York Times profile of Tony Petitti ‘83, who is running the new Major League Baseball TV network.  As the article points out, Tony played catcher while a student here.

Meanwhile, in the beautiful wilds of western Massachusetts, Cassie ‘97 makes jewelry and laments having moved out of our Alumni Relations ”Young Alumni” organizational category, at least formally.  In my experience — and I’ve had a lot given that I left that category way long ago — “young” is purely a state of mind.  Older, younger, whatever – Cassie seems to be putting her time to good use as evidenced by the lovely work displayed in her online shop.

Breathtaking photo exhibit:  if you’re at all able and even only moderately interested, a trip to see the new Art Sinsabaugh exhibit here on campus is well worth the effort.  Here’s a blog reference.
