About

The CPGC in Indonesia program offers a 10 week-long “research internship” experience for 7 Haverford and Bryn Mawr students. Focusing on building bridges between the social sciences and human rights work, it provides participants with the opportunity to learn about different research methodologies and to practice their skills in the field in partnership with Indonesian students and local NGOs. In 2009, the interns are:

Sarina Dane BMC ‘12
Sophia Guida BMC ‘10
Katherine Halbach BMC ‘11
Antonia Kerle BMC ‘11
Luke McKinstry ‘10
Ruilin Xu BMC ‘12
Jenny Zu ‘11

Language and Culture
The program begins June 13 in Jogajakarta, Java, Indonesia, with a two week language and culture immersion. We will be working with The Center for Language Development and Training at Sanata Dharma University to provide an intensive Indonesian language course, supplemented by a full program of cultural activities organized by our In-Country Coordinator. Students will study Indonesian for five hours per day, for a total of fifty hours of instruction, which should provide them with the language skills to engage in basic conversation. Students will live together in a suite at Sanata Dharma University, within walking distance of restaurants, Internet cafes, stores and transportation.

Research Institute
Upon completion of the two week language and culture program, students will fly to Bali, where they will join with their Indonesian student counterparts in a month-long interdisciplinary program of instruction and discussion focused on research methodology and ethics, as well as human rights and social justice issues in Indonesia. The instructional core will be provided by Haverford anthropologists Leslie Dwyer and Degung Santikarma, with additional instruction by visiting Indonesian and U.S. scholars in oral history methodologies, visual documentary approaches, and the particular challenges of public health and social justice-oriented research. Students will also continue to acquire language skills with an hour’s instruction each morning. During the research institute, students will live in Balinese family home stays in the capital city of Denpasar.

NGO-Affiliated Research
During the last four weeks of the program, students will have the opportunity to put their research skills to practice. In collaboration with an Indonesian student partner, each student will intern with one of our local partner organizations as a researcher. Research topics, strategies and desired outcomes will be negotiated with the sponsoring NGO to ensure projects of mutual learning benefit. The sponsoring NGO will provide intellectual and practical mentorship, working with the student researchers to locate relevant contacts and resources, and providing background materials as needed.
