Volunteer

Service Days:

8th Dimension organizes frequent Service Days to provide one time volunteer opportunities for Haverford Students. Service Days cover a wide variety of activities and interests. In the past, they have included environmental clean-ups, housing and school improvement projects, Philadelphia AIDS walk, Walk Against Hunger, and Light the Night Walk (against Leukemia and Lymphoma).

Service Days are a one-time commitment and free transportation is always provided. Some events, such as the AIDS Walk, may include a fundraising component.

Student Run Projects:

1-on-1 Tutoring is Haverford’s community tutoring program. Participants tutor students in the Ardmore area who commonly attend Haverford’s summer day camp, Serendipity.

AIDS Service Network (ASN) does a variety of collaborative work with AIDS organizations in the Philadelphia area and around the world.

Amigos is a tutoring and mentoring program that works in Philadelphia with the Latino community. Haverford students travel to the Clemente School every Saturday.

Books Through Bars is open to volunteers every first and third Saturday of each month. Haverford students travel to the A-space in West Philadelphia to pack books to send to prisoners upon their written requests.

Heston Elementary in West Philadelphia receives Haverford volunteer tutors several days weekly. Tutors work in various subjects with the same students each week.

Habitat in Philadelphia (HIP) works closely with Habitat for Humanity, sending a group of volunteers to do home construction on various Saturdays throughout the semester.

Housing Outreach Action Project (HOAP) sends volunteers every year to do alternative Spring Break trips with Habitat and other organizations.

Street Outreach meets each Wednesday night in the Dining Center to make and deliver sandwiches and soup to Logan Circle in Philadelphia.

Students to Seniors was created as an outlet for Haverford Students to interact with senior citizens in the nearby community. Activities include holiday events, talent shows and one-on-one visits, all to area nursing homes.

Individual Placement:

8th Dimension offers individual placements to students whose interests are not met by pre-existing 8D Programs.  Interested Students should contact Marilou Allen for further information.  For individual placements, transportation is always reimbursed.
