Weavers Way TOMORROW

Milla Sanes '10 | October 6, 2009

There is an opportunity to work on Weavers Way’s Saul CSA this Wednesday, October 6th from 4:00 to 6:00pm. This is a great chance to get outside while the weather is still good and experience a functioning production urban farm. You would be helping with the potatoes mainly, and just helping out in general. For more information about this farm and Weavers Way go to http://weaversway.coop/index.php?page=saul-csa.

I know that this is late notice, but please email me by midnight tonight if you would like to go. Also let me know if you have a car and would be willing to carpool because the farm isn’t very SEPTA accessible.

One-on-One Tutoring

Milla Sanes '10 | September 27, 2009

One-on-One Tutoring is a unique program designed to provide local K-12 students with free opportunities to receive weekly tutoring from Haverford College student volunteers.  Volunteers are paired with students for tutoring in any subject, and once paired they meet on campus at a convenient time on a weekly basis.  Once a pair is made, the fun begins! The fundamental idea behind the program is that putting students in one-on-one situations with an older student can have tremendous benefits for the both the student and the volunteer.  Working one-on-one fosters learning, but also builds relationships which support growth both academically and socially.

8th Dimension Internship

Milla Sanes '10 | September 23, 2009

8th Dimension is seeking people dedicated to the involvement in Community Service at Haverford. We would prefer Freshmen or Sophomores as we will be hiring out of the Intern pool for staff positions at the end of the year. We are looking for about 5 people that will work alongside the current 8th Dimension Staff and Director for the duration of the school year.
While the positions are unpaid, we need a serious commitment from the interns. The internship program will consist of about 3 hours a week. Interns will be helping to organize and execute work days, attend all staff meetings, assist around the office, and develop their own project.

To apply, please email your completed application to asanes@haverford.edu by Wednesday, September 30th at midnight.

Please see application questions below:
1. Name, Email, Year, any intentions of going abroad

2. List and describe in one or two sentences some significant service experiences you have had in the past, either at Haverford or in high school. Under your list, please write a sentence or two summarizing how much service experience you’ve had that was related to 8th Dimension, to give us a sense of how familiar you are with the organization.

3. Work at 8th Dimension is extremely collaborative. You will be integral to everything that we do. Briefly talk about how you feel about working closely with others to complete projects, versus working alone.

4. Why do you want to be an 8th Dimension Intern and what do you think you can bring to the team?

If you have any questions or concerns, please email  asanes at haverford.edu or lmoukarz@haverford.edu

A career in community service?!?

Stephanie Strockis '11 | April 29, 2009

On Thursday, April 23rd, 8D sponsored a speakers panel of Haverford alums that work in the Philadelphia area in community service and social justice. This well attended panel sought to inform students interested in similar careers after graduation what it takes to make it in the fast and furious life of community service.

The panel included:
Michael Froehlich (’97): a Staff Attorney at Community Legal Services

*Susanna Gilbertson (’98): a Training and Education Supervisor at Bilingual
Domestic Violence Program at Lutheran Settlement House

*Tim Ifill (’03): the Executive Director and Co-founder of Philly Fellows

*Jane Weber (’08): a Haverford House fellow at the Lourdes Center for Public
Health to coordinate student public health research in Camden.

Jobs in these fields are becoming just as competitive as other fields, so for those who couldn’t make it here’s a helpful hint: bilingual is the way to be!
